Other than the small adjustment in diet, Dr. Bernstein's program actually results in greatly increased daily schedule flexibility over traditional diabetic methods of management because the intensive insulin regime better tracks the body's natural hormonal processes. Further, the low carbohydrate/high protein nature of the diet results in both a huge reduction in the number of hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes and a dramatic decrease in the overall insulin dose, while also normalizing blood sugar readings. In fact, my hemoglobin AiC numbers are consistently in the low end of the normal range (from 4.4 to 5.2, with the normal range from 4.2 to 6.5). I feel indebted to both Dr. Bernstein and his diabetic method for my continued excellent health and my great freedom. It is a shame that not more diabetics have discovered Dr. Bernstein's method of treatment. After having worked at a diabetic camp for over 10 years, it is abundantly clear that traditional treatment methods result in diabetic complications at a relatively young age and constant concern for severe diabetic hypoglycemic reactions. Dr. Bernstein's method is truly the solution to diabetes, and is the best thing next to a cure as a treatment for this destructive disease.
